Standing Up to Bullying: Strategies to Create a Safe Teaching Environment

Walking into your school should not feel like preparing for conflict. The SATWI Advocacy Report underscores that workplace bullying affects many teachers, leading to anxiety and burnout (Engelbrecht-Aldworth, 2025). Addressing bullying safeguards your well-being and fosters a respectful school ecosystem. Let us explore five strategies to confront bullying and create a safer workplace.

Workplace bullying is a significant challenge, with a 2023 South African Journal of Education study reporting that 28% of teachers experience harassment, impacting mental health (De Wet, 2023). The Employment Equity Act, 1998 (Section 6) and SACE Code of Professional Ethics require principals to prevent harassment, yet issues persist (South Africa, Department of Employment and Labour, 1998; South African Council for Educators, n.d.). The SATWI Advocacy Report calls for anti-bullying policies to address behaviours like verbal abuse, supported by a 2024 International Journal of Educational Management study showing a 20% reduction in incidents with clear policies (Ngidi & Mncube, 2024). The Labour Relations Act, 1995 supports grievance channels for reporting bullying (South Africa, Department of Employment and Labour, 1995). A 2023 Frontiers in Psychology article notes that anti-bullying training reduces workplace tensions by 15% in African schools (Giorgi et al., 2023). A 2025 Labour Guide blog highlights legal remedies for South African teachers, reinforcing practical solutions (Labour Guide, 2025). By implementing these strategies, you foster a collaborative environment.

This is crucial because bullying heightens stress, with a 2024 Journal of Occupational Health Psychology study linking it to a 30% increase in teacher sick leave globally (Einarsen & Nielsen, 2024). Picture a teacher facing daily criticism from a senior colleague, feeling powerless due to fear of escalation. This lived experience illustrates how bullying isolates educators, weakening school culture. Addressing bullying empowers you to create a supportive environment, benefiting learners and staff, as supported by global anti-bullying initiatives (UNESCO, 2023).

To combat bullying, try these five strategies. First, identify bullying behaviours, per the Employment Equity Act, 1998. Second, report incidents via anonymous grievance channels or ELRC mediation (Labour Relations Act, 1995). Third, build alliances with colleagues to advocate for policies. Fourth, set boundaries assertively, using communication techniques (Engelbrecht-Aldworth, 2025). Finally, request anti-bullying workshops from your principal. These strategies create a safer workplace.

This week, identify one bullying behaviour you have noticed and try a strategy, like setting a boundary. Reflect on its impact and discuss with a colleague.

Standing up to bullying transforms your school into a respectful space. By using these strategies, you empower yourself and your ecosystem, building a kinder future.
