Leading schools that support teacher well-being
I had the honour of spending time with Prof Kat Yassim and her students, who are currently completing the Master's Module titled Future Trends in Education Leadership and Management, to discuss leading schools that support teacher well-being at the University of Johannesburg. Thank you to Prof Kat Yassim and her team for the honour of sharing my research with your students and initiating conversations around the importance of effective well-being management in our schools, particularly among managers who prioritise the well-being of teachers. Our hope is in you!
Well-being in Schools,Where Do We Start?
Whole School Well-being: Where do we start? 1.Build Strong Connections: Robust teacher-pupil relationships enhance academic and emotional outcomes. Foster trust through active listening and empathy (Source: Pianta, 2016). #SchoolWellBeingEncourage 2.Physical Activity: Regular movement breaks improve pupil focus and reduce stress. Just 10 minutes daily can boost mental health (Source: Donnelly et al., 2016). #HealthySchoolsTeach 3.Emotional Regulation: Explicitly teaching pupils mindfulness or coping strategies reduces anxiety and improves classroom behaviour (Source: Durlak et al., 2011). #SELWorksSupport 4.Teacher Well-Being: Teachers with high well-being are more effective and less prone to burnout. Prioritise staff self-care programmes (Source: Jennings & Greenberg, 2009). #TeacherCareCreate
