Emotional Well-Being: Navigating Life’s Ups and Downs

Introduction
Life’s emotional highs and lows – whether a toddler’s tantrum, a teenager’s stress, or a professional’s workplace pressure – shape our well-being. Managing emotions fosters resilience and connection across all life stages. This blog, part of The Well-being Initiative’s campaign, explores emotional regulation strategies, drawing on global and South African research. Inspired by Ubuntu’s collective care, we share tools to navigate emotions, creating inclusive communities that enhance well-being for everyone, from young children to leaders, in homes, workplaces, and beyond.

Understanding Key Concepts and Theories Emotional regulation involves managing feelings to enhance well-being, reducing stress across contexts (Boyd & Alexander, 2022). The PERMA model’s positive emotion pillar emphasizes cultivating joy to foster resilience (Seligman, 2011). Social support buffers emotional stress, as seen in studies on adolescent well-being (Narainsamy et al., 2024). Ubuntu’s collective approach supports emotional well-being by fostering community care (Mbigi, 1997). South African research highlights how emotional regulation strengthens community resilience, a principle applicable globally (Wissing et al., 2022). These theories create frameworks for inclusive emotional well-being across all roles.
